What to expect:
Starting therapy can be full of unknowns and the uncertainty of this can be scary.
Fear can turn into another barrier to seeking treatment and getting the help you need.
Let’s address some frequently asked questions to make you more familiar with the process—
FAQs
Where do I start?
Reach out on the website or send me an email to schedule a free consultation call. This is usually about a 10-15 minute call to determine your needs and see if we’re a good fit for working with one another. If we decide to move forward, we will set up your first appointment. If for any reason we are not a good fit, I can help provide resources and referrals to best meet your needs.
What do I do before my first session?
Once we set up your first session, I will send you a Welcome Email to our client portal. It will direct you to create a profile to log in. Once you are logged in, you will find intake paperwork to review and complete before our first session. Upload completed forms to the portal and reach out with any questions or concerns!
What does the first session look like?
The first session is a 60 minute intake assessment. This is my chance to meet you, understand what brings you to therapy, learn about your background, identify your goals for therapy, and start building our therapeutic relationship. We may not get through the entire intake in one session-if that is the case we will continue working through the assessment in following sessions. The first intake session is a slightly larger fee due to the length of the session as well as the additional work that goes into on-boarding new clients. This is a one time fee no matter how long it takes to work through the assessment. All sessions following the first session will be at the individual session rate.
What happens next?
Following sessions will be 45-50 minutes. Part of the intake assessment involves setting treatment goals. Sessions will focus on individual needs, processing stressors and working towards specific treatment goals.
How often will I meet with my therapist?
This depends on each individual client and their needs. Most clients meet once a week, however some prefer every other week or some cut back to once a month. This is a conversation you and I will have to determine level of care and can change based on current needs.
How long will I be in therapy?
This depends on a client’s needs and treatment goals. Some treatment goals can be met in a short amount of time, however others involve more profound change which result in a longer therapeutic relationship. You and I will determine this together and we will continue to assess throughout treatment.
Is therapy confidential?
Yes-I am legally and ethically bound to keep what you share during our work together confidential. However, as a mandated reporter there are some limits to confidentiality to note: if you tell me you want to hurt yourself, if you tell me you plan to hurt someone else, or if you tell me someone is hurting a child or dependent adult. Additionally, I am able to share specific information to identified individuals if you provide me written permission by signing a Release of Information consent form. Finally, if you choose to use your insurance Out Of Network benefits to get reimbursed for services, I will be required to share a diagnosis, dates of session attended, CPT code for services, and potentially other requested information (i.e. treatment summary or treatment plan).
Any other questions? Fears? Concerns?
I’m happy to talk through any of these to determine how to meet your needs.
